Recent Wierd Happenings...

When I took the short drive home from school at approx. 3:30 p.m. yesterday (we had a 2:30 dismissal) I had no idea what the evening would bring. Our school Christmas program was on the agenda, and since the kids were doing such a good job in practice, I really had no nervousness going into the evening. Needing to be at the church by about 7 p.m., we decided to swing by Skyline to take advantage of Kid's Night pricing and enjoy one of our favorite meals. As we sat down and began to place our order, Kaitlynn started whining...she had stayed up late at mom's the night before, and then had a full day at the school with no nap in between. She continued to cry for the first 15 minutes of the meal, and although it wasn't a hysterical situation, it did get the attention of several people around us. Greg gobbled down his food, and after much begging and pleading with her to stop, finally took her to the van. I stayed in the restaurant with the other kids, and we finished up. About 10-15 minutes later, we joined Greg and Kaitlynn in the van. She was still a little worked up, but fell asleep shortly after we began our little drive to the church for the program. The program went well, except for a small issue with a mic stand that caused me to mess up in directing an entire song. We re-did the song at the end of the program because a little kindergartner had an adorable solo that didn't turn out right the first time, due to my error. After the program ended and the crowd was dismissed, I noticed that Greg was standing at the back holding Allison, who was already in her coat, and he had a pretty impatient look on his face. I disregarded it, as any good wife would do :), and continued to talk to a friend. A couple of minutes later, someone came in and told me that Evan had cut his head around the eye area. Knowing that Ev is a little bit of a drama king when he first gets an injury, I didn't get too excited. I saw Greg going to take care of him, and kept talking. Pretty soon, another friend came in and said that Evan was hurt pretty badly, so I headed back to the restroom to see what was happening. He was surrounded by people, so I couldn't even get that close (I figured the two nurses who were tending him knew better than I what to do), but one look at his poor little face said it all. We decided to get him home and cleaned up before making the decision about going to the ER.

When we left the church, Greg shared with me the reason for the impatient/distracted look that I had seen earlier. Around 8 p.m. he had received a call from the Cridersville Police Dept. The officer said that he had received a complaint from a telemarketing company about a possible child abuse situation, and it came back to Greg. This is the explanation: when Greg took Kaitlynn to the van at Skyline, he put her in her car seat, and then got into the driver's seat. She continued to cry for a period of time, and he tried to talk with her and told her the consequences she would receive. He didn't realize that his cell phone was ringing (probably because she was crying so loudly), and he accidentally bumped send, which answered the call. For two and a half minutes or so, a telemarketer was on the other end of the line listening to Kaitlynn's cries. The telemarketer then called the cops, and told them that it sounded like a child was being beaten or abused. The cop came to our house, but we were at the program, so he called Greg's phone, told him the situation, and said he would need to come by and check things out when we arrived home. About 5 minutes after we arrived home, the policeman (who is a Christian guy that we had met before), came. Evan was sitting in the chair looking like he looks in the pictures below, and I was giving him Tylenol and cleaning him up. When the cop saw Evan, he was a little bewildered! He questioned Evan pretty intensely, and then asked about the situation with Kaitlynn. I wasn't nervous, basically because I know that our philosophy of discipline is within the limits of the law. He understood that and believes the same as us, so we chatted for a little while and then he went on his way. A few minutes later Greg took Evan to the ER. They did x-rays on his face and right knee, and found that his knee is sprained and he has nasal contusions. They did liquid stitches in four or five places on his face. The photos below speak for themselves! In case you are wondering how in the world it happened, here's the story. Several of the boys were having a race out in the parking lot after the program. They must have been on the gravel rather than the blacktop. One of Evan's friends who is a few years older, ran up behind him and picked him up to run him faster, if you know what I mean. The friend tripped and fell, slamming Evan into the gravel with 130 lbs. of force behind him. He is very fortunate not to have a broken back or neck, or severe head injuries. We are keeping a close eye on him, in case anything else surfaces. I felt so bad for the other boy. He will learn a lesson from this, I'm sure, and so will Evan, but it is still hard to have to feel the responsibility of it. Evan's arms and hands must have been held straight down, because the tops of his hands have nics and broken blood vessels all over them. His right knee has a big scrape, but it is just surface. His pants weren't even torn.

And The Wierdness Continues...
